Here's how the SLS 3D printing process works:

Powder Bed: The process begins with a thin layer of powdered material spread evenly across the build platform inside the 3D printer.

Laser Sintering: A high-powered laser scans the cross-section of the 3D model onto the powdered bed. The laser selectively sinters (melts) or fuses the powdered material together at the specific points defined by the digital design.

Cooling and Layering: Once a layer is sintered, the build platform is lowered, and a new layer of powder is spread on top of the previous one. The laser then sinters the new layer to the layer below. This process repeats layer by layer until the entire object is complete.

Unused Powder: The unused powder remains in place to support the object during the printing process. It acts as a sort of natural support structure. This means that SLS does not require additional support structures like some other 3D printing methods.

Post-Processing: After printing, the object is removed from the powder bed, and any excess loose powder is cleaned off. The finished object may require additional post-processing steps, such as heat treatment, surface finishing, or part assembly, depending on the specific application and material used.

FDM 3D PRINTING
Fused deposition modelling (FDM), also known as the material extrusion additive manufacturing technique, utilizes polymers as the raw material (filament). The filament is usually heated to a molten state and then extruded through the nozzle of the machine (3D printer). The nozzle head can move in three degrees of freedom (DoF) to deposit the extruded polymer on the build plate as per the G-code instructions. As shown, the filament is continuously fed through the extruder and nozzle of the machine via the two rollers rotating in opposite directions.
